Where Does Moodle Store Uploaded Files

Moodle allows yous to postal service multiple files at once in a Folder. Folders can contain files such as PDFs, Word documents, or epitome files, simply cannot contain Moodle Activities (such as Quizzes, Assignments, and Forums)or Resources (such as URLs or Pages).

You can upload individual files or a .zip file containing several files on your computer to a Folder. You tin can update the folder to add boosted files, rename files, or move them into sub-folders.

Note: You must first utilise the Add together an action or resource popular-up to add a folder, as detailed below. Yous can and so drag-and-drib files into the upload box on the Calculation a new binder page. You cannot use drag-and-drib a "folder" from your estimator onto your Moodle class page, but you can drag-and-drop a .zip file and opt to unzip and create a folder.

Add a Moodle Binder and Upload Files

  1. In the menu bar at the elevation of your course page, select Turn editing on (dark-green pencil icon Turn editing on green pencil icon). Editing icons and links volition appear.
  2. Locate theSection where you want the resources to appear. If the Department is collapsed, click the Section title to open it.
  3. At the bottom of the Section, click + Add an activeness or resource. The Add an activity or resources pop-upwardly will open showing a tile for each bachelor Resource or Activity.
    Note: By default, the panel opens to All and shows all Resources and Activities. If you lot have starred favorite activities or resource, the panel will open to Starred. To view only Resources, at the superlative of the Add an action or resources pop-up, click Resource.
  4. (Optional) On the an activity tile, for data, click the Data icon (information icon). If you frequently add together a certain activity or resource, click the Star icon (favorite star icon) to add it to the Starred tab.
  5. Select the Folder icon or Folder link.  The Adding a new Folder page opens.
  6. In the Name field, provide a championship for your binder (required). The name you enter will brandish as the link to the folder on your class page.
  7. In the Description field, add a cursory description of the folder contents (optional). To brandish the clarification on the class page, cheque Display clarification on course page(optional).
  8. Add together files under the Content heading. The easiest manner to add together files is using elevate-and-drop:
    1. Adjust your estimator'southward windows so that you tin can view both the Files area in Moodle and the files on your estimator.
    2. Select and elevate each file from your computer onto the big bluish arrow in the Files area in Moodle.

      Note: To upload multiple files at once, hold down the CTRL cardinal on your keyboard (Windows), or the COMMAND primal (MAC) as you select each of the files you lot wish to upload. So drag the files into the Files area in Moodle.
  9. Alternatively, you tin employ the File picker to browse for files on your computer.
    Annotation: The easiest way to upload multiple files with the File picker is to first make them into a .zippo file, then unzip the file in Moodle. For directions on zipping files, encounter Create a Cypher File (below).
    1. Under the Content heading, click Add... (Screenshot of adding a file to the folder.) at top left of theFiles area. The File picker popular-upwards window will open up.
    2. SelectUpload a file (left) and and then selectChoose file.The File picker window will open for you lot to search for and select the file on your reckoner. Select the file you would like to upload and click Open. The File picker window will close and the name of your file volition announced next to the Choose file button.
    3. SelectUpload this file. TheFile picker window volition close and the file will be listed in the Files area.
    4. If you have uploaded a .null file to your folder, the next pace is to unzip it. In the Files expanse, select the zip file icon. A pop-upwards window for the file will open. Click Unzip (at meridian). The pop-upwards window volition shut and the original files will announced along with the .nil file in the Files area.

      (Optional) You can delete the zip file, or leave information technology in the binder to permit students to download all the files at one time to unzip on their own computers. To delete it, click the .nothing file icon again and and so click Delete (at top) in the pop-upward window. Click OK to confirm the deletion. The pop-up window will close and the .goose egg file will exist removed.
  10. To select how folder contents should display from theDisplay folder contents drop-downwardly carte du jour, choose:On a separate page or Inline on a course page.
    If you cull to display the folder contents on a course folio, the clarification will exist displayed only if "Display description on course page" is checked. Likewise notation that when a binder is displayed on the course page, participants' view deportment cannot be logged.
  11. To accept subfolders expanded by default, select the check box forEvidence subfolders expanded.
  12. To permit students to download the entire contents of a folder as a .naught file, select the Show download folder button.
  13. Click Save and return to course (at-lesser) to consummate the file upload process. The Folder will appear in the Section to which information technology was added with a folder icon (screenshot of folder icon.).

To open the Folder, select the Binder name.  Once open up, a Folder shows a directory of files. To download files, students click a file name, or if provided in Step xi to a higher place, clickDownload Folder to download the folder contents as a .zip file.

Organize the Files within a Folder

Files in folders are listed in alphanumeric gild. To brand the files announced in a particular club for your students, you will need to rename the files.

One option is to add numbers in front of the file names, for case:
01-handout.pdf
02-reading.pdf
03-spreadsheet.xlsx
04-instructions.docx

To rename files already in a Moodle Folder:

  1. In the menu bar at the tiptop of your course page, select Turn editing on(light-green pencil icon Turn editing on green pencil icon).
  2. Locate the binder y'all desire to configure and click Edit, and from the drop-downwardly carte, clickEdit settings.The Updating Binder page will open.
  3. Under Content, in the Files surface area, open any sub-folders as needed. To rename a file, click the File icon. A pop-up window will open.
  4. In the Proper name field, edit the proper noun, and so clickUpdate. The pop-up volition close and theFilesarea volition show the new file name.
    Notation: DO NOT remove or modify the file extension (e.yard., .pdf, or .docx). A proper file extension is required for the file to download and open for your students.
  5. Rename any other files and click Save and return to grade.

Create a Cipher File

To upload multiple files at once using the Moodle File picker, compress the files on your estimator into a .zip file. A .zip file is a file type where multiple files or folders are compressed into a single, smaller file with a ".zip" file extension. Uploading multiple files to Moodle every bit a .naught file can salvage you fourth dimension because it requires less clicking.

Windows Users

In your computer's file browser, hold down the Control key every bit y'all click to select the folders or files y'all wish to compress. Correct-click any of the selected files.
